On contextual ranking queries in databases
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper, we identify a novel and interesting type of queries, contextual ranking queries, which return the ranks of query tuples among some context tuples given in the queries. Contextual ranking queries are useful for olap and decision support applications in non-traditional data exploration. They provide a mechanism to quickly identify where tuples stand within the context. In this paper, we extend the sql language to express contextual ranking queries and propose a general partition-based framework for processing them. In this framework, we use a novel method that utilizes bitmap indices built on ranking functions. This method can efficiently identify a small number of candidate tuples, thus achieves lower cost than alternative methods. We analytically investigate the advantages and drawbacks of these methods, according to a preliminary cost model. Experimental results suggest that the algorithm using bitmap indices on ranking functions can be substantially more efficient than other methods.

Enabling Data Retrieval : by Ranking and Beyond
The ubiquitous usage of databases for managing structured data, compounded with the expanded reach of the Internet to end users, has brought forward new scenarios of data retrieval. Users often want to express non-traditional fuzzy queries with soft criteria, in contrast to Boolean queries, and to explore what choices are available in databases and how they match the query criteria. Conventiona...
متن کاملRankSQL: Supporting Ranking Queries in Relational Database Management Systems
Ranking queries (or top-k queries) are dominant in many emerging applications, e.g., similarity queries in multimedia databases, searching Web databases, middleware, and data mining. The increasing importance of top-k queries warrants an efficient support of ranking in the relational database management system (RDBMS) and has recently gained the attention of the research community. Top-k querie...
متن کاملTop-k Ranking of Preference Query Results for XML Based on Similarity of Contextual States ⋆
The ranking method of XML preference query results is an important issue. For user’s preference query request, the query results are often user’s interested information. In order to satisfy the user’s personalized query requirements, this paper proposes the XML contextual preference model. When a user submits a query request, the user’s preference query results depend on the contextual conditio...
متن کاملTop-k best probability queries and semantics ranking properties on probabilistic databases
There has been much interest in answering top-k queries on probabilistic data in various applications such as market analysis, personalised services, and decision making. In probabilistic relational databases, the most common problem in answering top-k queries (ranking queries) is selecting the top-k result based on scores and top-k probabilities. In this paper, we firstly propose novel answers...
متن کاملSound ranking algorithms for XML search in PF/Tijah
We argue that ranking algorithms for XML should reflect the actual combined content and structure constraints of queries, while at the same time producing equal rankings for queries that are semantically equal. Ranking algorithms that produce different rankings for queries that are semantically equal are easily detected by tests on large databases: We call such algorithms not sound. We report t...
